Glossop Station – parking charges
Bad news for users of Glossop Station and potentially residents of streets nearby the station, with the news that from Tuesday 29th August parking charges will be introduced for the station car park.
The unwelcome bank holiday return present will see a charge of £3 per day introduced – with no details at current of how the charge will be collected or if there will be any reductions for part day – evenings etc.
Northern advise that the charge is been introduced “after significant commercial benchmarking with othercar parks; both across the region and the wider rail network, including other Train Operating Companies.”
They further advise that
Developing a sustainable revenue income from our estate is a key objective for this franchise, whereby not being solelydependent upon subsidy is important, and so meeting the Government’s requirement to reduce the funds converted bytaxpayers into running the railways.
Implementing charges is also aligned with stakeholder requirements for the industry to deter non-rail users from using the carparking spaces at the station.
The charge has been introduced without any consultation, as Northern advise that “a public consultation would be somewhat challenging to coordinate”.
