Merchant Navy Day 2020
Today would normally have seen flag-raising ceremonies take place in Glossop and Buxton to both high light and commemorate Merchant Navy Day.
Alas due to Covid, we’ve not held the ceremonies today, but we are still displaying the flag and highlighting that today is Merchant Navy Day and as we still have the same Mayor of High Peak Councillor Ed Kelly for Hadfield North, pictured is the assembled gathering in Glossop from last year’s Seafarers UK #MerchantNavyDay
The campaign, by Seafarers UK, remembers the sacrifices, salutes the courage and supports the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy.
If we had gathered, we would have read out the citation from the Duke of Wessex asking us to remember and commemorate the service that the men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets have done over the years in both peacetime and conflict and continue to do so today.
Thus, ensuring that at least on this day, they are remembered, with that act of remembrance meaning so much to their families and to the retired but most especially those still at sea.
