236 / 7 Glossop to Ashton Under Lyne Service Changes
* Update 4/9/20 – From posts first seen on the GLOSSOP 394 / 341 / 236 BUS ROUTE group – the new 236 has stopped running.
This has been advised as due to financial problems with the parent company (GB Group).
I’ll advise any additional updates as and when received.
This is the first of 3 posts around changes to local bus services; this post looks at the 236/7 changes, the next will look at whats it means for Gamesley with a final post on ticket options.
Back in July Stagecoach advised that they were going to stop running the 236 and replace that with extra trips on the 237.
Alas, despite the concerns raised by locals, councillors and the MP, Stagecoach was not for changing and confirmed their plans.
However, an alternative operator has now come forward offering a replacement 236 service, with amendments to the route to include Simmondley, Gamesley and Tameside Hospital.
These changes to the 236/7 officially come into effect from Sunday (30th August). However, due to the bank holiday, they effectively go into effect on Tuesday (1st September).
236 Glossop to Ashton Under Lyne – via Simmondley, Gamesley and Tameside Hospital
From Tuesday (1st September), North Western will run the new 236 service setting off with a first journey (from Glossop) 25 minutes earlier than the current service at 06.10 (Monday to Friday) from Shirebrook Park and then running hourly at 35 minutes past the hour (except for 12.35) with a final trip from Glossop at 17.35.
From Ashton Under Lyne, the first journey will now leave at 07.35. It will then run hourly at 35 minutes past the hour (except for 12.35) with a final trip from Ashton at 17.35.
On Saturday’s there’s just one difference to the service with the 06.10 journey from Glossop not running, with the first journey on a Saturday been 07.35.
In addition to changes to the times, there are also significant changes to the route.
Journeys from Glossop will now go via Primrose Lane, Pennine Road and Simmondley Lane to cover Simmondley.
It then via Glossop Road, Cottage Lane and Melandra Castle Road to cover Gamesley.
Returning to Dinting Vale and the ‘original route’ until Stalybridge Station, then diverting via Ridge Hill Lane and Darnton Road and into Tameside Hospital.
It then goes via Montague Road and Beaufort Road to cover Tameside College before heading into Ashton Under Lyne stoping on Wellington Road outside the Town Hall rather than in the Interchange.
On the way back it starts from Henrietta Street (the road next to the Ash Tree / Weatherspoons) and then the reverse of the above.
As before, there is no evening, Sunday or bank holiday service.

237 Glossop to Ashton – via Hadfield and Tintwistle
For the 237 there’s no change of operator, it remains a Stagecoach service.
The Sunday and Bank Holiday (Sunday service) service remain the same at current. This will be what will run on the Bank Holiday Monday (31st August).
From Tuesday morning the changes kick in (for Monday to Friday), starting with the first journey from Glossop now been at 05.55 instead of the current 05.33 (from Shirebrook Park).
Journeys then leave Shirebrook Park at 06.11, 06.36, 06.53, 07.12, 07.38 (from the Market Hall), and 08.01.
After that, the journeys start at the Market Hall at 08.33, 08.58, 09.23, 09.48, 10.13, 10.38, then at 03, 23, and 43 minutes past the hour until 3pm, then 15.08, 15.33, 15.58, 16.23, 16.48, 17.13, 17.33, 17.53. Before a last few starting at Shirebrook Park at 18.31, 18.56 and 19.36.
For folk in Tintwistle, the 237 is between 3 and 5 minutes after the time at Hadfield Station and between 7 and 10 minutes after the time at the Gunn Inn.
Times are also changed on the evening service with journeys starting at 43 minutes past the hour from 20.43 instead of the current 28 minutes past the hour.
On Saturdays, all 237 journeys now run from Glossop Market Hall with the first journey been at 06.38, then at 38 minutes past the hour until 10 am.
It then runs at 18 and 48 minutes past the hour until 7 pm when it changes to 43 minutes past the hour until the end of the day.
All 237 journeys that go to Ashton Under Lyne run to and start from the Interchange in Ashton Under Lyne.
From Ashton, on Monday to Friday, there are some changes to early morning journeys with them starting from Stalybridge instead of Ashton.
For the rest of the day, there are changes in line with the above. There are also changes to the evening service, which will see journeys leaving at 45 minutes past the hour from 7 pm, until the last journey at 23.31.
