‘Thank You’ to volunteering heroes
It’s almost the end of Volunteers week, which has taken place from the 1st to 7th June.
Volunteers’ Week is an annual event to highlight the enormous impact our volunteers make day in, day out.
This is especially clear during the last few weeks and months during which the many things the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted is the critical role volunteers play in their local communities.
This year, with the impact of Covid-19, we have even more volunteers to thank. Individuals and groups across the High Peak have done everything from checking on their neighbours and making sure the most vulnerable have the food and medicines they need. To those that bring a much-welcomed, friendly voice on the telephone.
Our care and support for each other have been truly humbling, and I want to say an enormous thank you to those heroes across the High Peak who give up their time to help others. You are the lifeblood of our Borough, and we genuinely appreciate all you do – it does not go unrecognised.
Fittingly the Friday of Volunteer Week is also #WorldEnvironmentDay. It would be remiss not to say a massive thanks to all the volunteers out there that help do a whole range of things from litter picks in our parks and local streets and grot spots. To those that take on the role to help protect, maintain and manage beautiful countryside, parks and natural beauty spots.
During this year’s volunteers week, the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire has sent a card of thanks to many of our local voluntary groups. As a Council, we are also looking at how we can go about recognising the work of volunteers across our community, and if you have any suggestions, please get in touch – in my mind it will most likely be something like the Community Awards the Council used to run many a moon ago.
If you’ve never volunteered, but have been inspired by some of the stories of recent weeks and months, please get in touch with one of the many great groups across the High Peak.
There’s a range of organisation from groups like G52 working in our/ a specific community to organisations like the Bureau in Glossop, the New Mills and District Volunteer Centre, High Peak CVS and Connex in Buxton that can put you in touch with many others.
