Did the Romans visit the Centurion ?
Following a call from a local resident relating to the planning application at Hurdlow, the County Council’s Development Control Archaeologist, has requested an additional condition be added to the approval given at the development control committee.
The additional condition will require the developers to put in place a “watching brief” which although the lowest level of archaeological intervention, will (from the details I can find) require the developer to have on site a trained archaeologist to record any features as they are revealed during construction.
The reason for this is because although the ‘site’ is around 500m south west of the Melandra site, and well outside the area, thought to be occupied by the ‘civilian settlement’ that grew-up around the fort. However the understanding of the experts may well have been wrong, and there have been no recent archeological investigations on this side of the estate, perhaps meaning that the area around the Centurion may have more of a historic link than just the name of the pub.
