Christmas Folk Train
Over the last few years, the folk train has become a well established local event, with the Christmas version usually been something extra special.
Although well established, it is possible that you may not have heard of it, and if you haven’t once a month on the 4th Thursday, the train at around 6.56pm from Manchester back to Glossop becomes a little more lively with a live band taking over part of one of the coaches and performing on the train from Manchester back to Glossop, before heading over to the Glossop Labour Club to perform there for a few hours, before returning to the train and performing once again back to Manchester.
For this year’s Christmas folk train, the band were the Eunice Bob Cat’s and in the arrangement that was performing for the folk train – a 17 piece ensemble performing a mix of music inspired by the Louisiana swampland, rooted in the ballads of the French speaking Acadians of Canada (thanks to the High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership website for the musical description – click here for more details).
Not just wanting a fun evening of music, the team of volunteers that run the Glossop Labour Club, arranged a mass cake baking session, in effort to not only help provide sustenance for the revellers but hopefully donations as well toward the work of Pauline Town and the Station Pub in Ashton Under Lyne, who work to help the homeless.
Well, after a great evening’s entertainment (you can see some pictures by clicking here) the collection from the cake sales, supporting by the donation of the collection for the band raised just over £500.
The money raised has gone to support three people in getting setup in housing in terms of supporting deposits and starter packs to help them get settled in.
The next folk train is Thursday 25th January 2018 and will feature the Beech Band.
